The Club Series Treadmill features the same display and controls found on Life Fitness’ best-selling health club model, and it includes a message center that provides workout feedback and a workout profile display that shows workout progress. The GoSystem Quick Start feature remembers your preferred walk, jog and run speeds, so you can get started with the push of a button. Other features include 16 workout programs, six custom workouts, a wireless Polar heart rate monitor chest strap, built-in reading rack, and an oversized, dual accessory trays that holds water bottle, cell phone, MP3 player, or remote. Under the hood is a 4.0 HP AC motor that lets you run at speeds of up to 12 mph (20 kph). It’s backed by a lifetime warranty.

It’s equipped with the FlexDeck Shock Absorption System, a patented system that reduces shock and impact to the knees, back, and joints by nearly 30 percent compared to other treadmills. And because the Lifespring™ shock absorbers found in the FlexDeck are nearly indestructible, the flex experienced during the first use will be the same flex experienced in all subsequent workouts, even years later.

All Life Fitness treadmills offer interactive heart rate monitoring and HeartSync heart rate controlled workouts, which automatically adjust the resistance based on your heart rate feedback via the Lifepulse digital contact heart rate sensors on the arms or via the included Polar wireless chest strap. Simply choose any HeartSync program and the treadmill incline automatically adjusts in 0.1 percent increments to keep you in your target heart rate zone. The patented Lifepulse digital heart rate monitoring system uses three separate technologies to digitally filter noise that may disrupt the reading of your true heart rate, so you’re sure to get a safe, effective workout every time.

Boredom is never an option with Life Fitness treadmills, with a wide variety of challenging workout programs built into the easy-to-use console. Save time by storing up to seven pre-programmed My Workouts, and replay them at any time. Rename them for different days of the week or different users in your household. Your weight and incline levels are automatically saved, and you can also store personal results for each workout to keep track of your progress. Based on your workout’s specific time, incline and heart rate level, a customized cool-down program helps to ensure your heart rate properly returns to a normal level at the end of a workout. You can also conveniently change programs without restarting or losing your current workout information. This treadmill comes with the following programs to choose from:

Manual: Gives you complete freedom to choose your own speed and resistance levels.

Hill: Challenges you with intervals of multiple hills and valleys with each hill becoming progressively more difficult.

Random: Includes many different motivating combinations of hills and valleys.

Time-Based Goal: For a time specified by the user, this workout used 1.5 percent incline as the baseline to accurately simulate running outdoors on flat ground. Anything below a 1.5 percent grade is then used to simulate running downhill. The inclines and declines last between 30 and 60 seconds. The goal of the workout is to help users train for outdoor running.

Distance Goal: This workout is designed to build endurance. The objective is to cover a certain distance in miles. Once the objective is met, the workout automatically transitions into a cool-down phase and ends afterwards.

Calories Goal: This workout is designed to promote weight loss and weight control. The objective is to burn a certain number of calories in The selected time duration. Once the objective is met, the workout automatically transitions into a cool-down phase.

Time in Zone Goal: Console displays the accumulated time in your target heart rate zone.

Speed Interval Training: Intensity levels quickly alternate between high and low levels to simulate a typical speed workout.

It also includes the following HeartSync workouts:

Fat Burn: A great workout for beginners or for those days when you need a lighter workout. It automatically adjusts resistance to maintain your heart rate at 65 percent of your theoretical maximum.

Cardio: Maximizes caloric burn and boosts your energy level. It automatically adjusts resistance to maintain your heart rate at 80 percent of your theoretical maximum.

Heart Rate Hill™: An interval workout made up of three hills with each hill becoming progressively more difficult based on your heart rate goals. The first hill is 70 percent of your maximum heart rate (HRMax) and becomes progressively tougher (75 percent HRMax on the second and 80 percent HRMax on the third). The valley is always defined as 65 percent HRMax. It’s similar to training for sports activities such as hockey, basketball, and soccer.

Heart Rate Interval™: Climb a series of alternating hills (80 percent HRMax) and valleys (65 percent HRMax). The number of times you climb each hill depends on your fitness level. It’s similar to training for endurance activities such as triathlons and running.

Extreme Heart Rate™: Quickly raises and lowers resistance to get your heart rate up to 85 percent HRMax and down to 65 percent HRMax as quickly as possible. It’s similar to training for sports activities such as tennis, racquetball, football, and sprinting.

About Life Fitness
What started as one man’s pursuit to improve his own physical condition, eventually turned into a global fitness revolution. That man was Keene P. Dimick, the mastermind behind the legendary Lifecycle® exercise bike. The story of Life Fitness began when two young entrepreneurs, Ray Wilson and Augie Nieto, saw the promise of Dr. Dimick’s invention. Even though it was slightly ahead of its time, they believed the Lifecycle exercise bike could help generations of athletes, trainers, exercisers, and people everywhere live happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.

Wilson and Nieto bought the rights to the Lifecycle bike from Dr. Dimick, perfected it, and sold it out of a motor home to health clubs across America. Despite the overwhelming odds and initial unpopularity of the Lifecycle exercise bike, the two passion-filled pioneers turned a two-man operation and a seemingly impossible vision into a prosperous reality. Along the way, they shaped the future of Life Fitness as well as the fitness industry, bringing cardiovascular training into the mainstream and helping ignite the health club boom.

Today, Life Fitness is the global leader in designing and manufacturing a full line of reliable, high quality fitness equipment for commercial and consumer use. It is the number one brand of fitness equipment in health clubs worldwide.

About Treadmills
Walking is still considered one of the most beneficial cardiovascular exercises for people of all ages, body types, and fitness levels. As a fundamental form of aerobic training, walking has numerous physical benefits for the heart, lungs, and circulatory system, while also increasing muscle tone and burning fat calories. Treadmills provide a convenient way to regularly exercise in all weather conditions in the comfort and safety of your own home.

From beginners just starting an exercise regimen to advanced athletes looking to maintain their fitness level, anyone interested in getting and staying in shape can benefit greatly from regular use of a treadmill. Treadmills allow you to determine the pace, distance, and complexity of the workout based on your needs, all while watching television, talking on the telephone, or reading a magazine. Much easier on sensitive joints like the knees and hips, treadmill walking and running surfaces are typically long, padded platforms that allow ample room for a long stride and comfortable, low-impact walk or jog without the harsh contact of a concrete surface.

While many different types, styles, and price ranges of treadmills exist, many of them offer unique features like a fold-up design for easy storage, an electronic display monitor showing speed, distance, workout time, incline level, and burned calories, and EKG grip pulses to monitor the heart rate while exercising. Regardless of the simple to complex features you may choose, treadmills offer an array of aerobic exercise opportunities that will provide long-lasting beneficial cardiovascular results without a commute to the gym or a jog in the rain.

Bowflex Series 3 Treadmill Reviews By Customers

I did quite a bit of research on this treadmill before purchasing it and my only concern was the multitude of comments regarding poor customer service. I decided to buy the treamill anyway and hope nothing went wrong. The treadmill worked great until I moved and my movers man-handled it a bit. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it, so I finally broke down and called customer service. Turns out my movers managed to get a hold of a couple of wires in the back when they moved it and ripped the wires out. Unfortunately, it took a few phone calls to diagnose the issue since we were trying to avoid opening up the console if it wasn’t necessary. I found the customer service team at Nautilus (this is who handles this treadmill) to be incredibly friendly, helpful and responsive. I was not only satisfied with the service, but I was blown away by how great it was. In one instance, the service tech didn’t know where my afflicted wire went exactly, so she asked a colleague and within minutes, we both had instructive pictures detailing what needed to be done. The treadmill itself is fantastic and sturdy. Love it. I’m also now a huge fan of the Nautilus customer service team. If you have an issue, they will help find a solution.

Warranty Warning! Misleading and Frustrating… – Amy in New Jersey – NJ, United States
I had this treadmill for less than 6 months when it simply stopped working. The power would come on, but that’s it. No problem… it’s under warranty, right?

Thus began the customer service/warranty nightmare with Bowflex/Nautilus.

Day 1: Called customer service from work, explained the problem and asked them to send someone out. I was informed that I would need to go over the problem with customer service when I was at home and could access the treadmill.

Day 2: Called customer service and was informed that I needed to grab my multi-meter so we could take the treadmill apart and diagnose the problem. Not owning a multi-meter and not knowing exactly what a multi-meter was, I asked again, can you please just send out a tech to fix it. That’s when I was informed that Bowflex/Nautilus will not send out someone to diagnose the problem, they will only send someone out to FIX the problem. Not being a treadmill repair tech myself, I thought this was absolutely ridiculous. I was informed by customer service that they could recommend someone for me to HIRE to come out and diagnose the issue, but that the warranty only covered replacement/repair of the treadmill, not diagnosing the issue. Unbelievable.

Day 6: After going to the hardware store, spending on a multi-meter… I am unable to get through to customer service after being on hold two separate time for a total of 57 minutes.

Day 7: Called customer service and attempted to diagnose the problem with the multi-meter. The customer service rep (not a repair technician) pulled up the Series 3 repair manual on her computer screen and began reading steps to me. We took off the motor housing and began disconnecting wires. I was instructed to test the wires with the multi-meter. However, she was not even able to tell me the proper setting/reading I was looking for on the multi-meter. So, basically after testing the first wire, not understanding the reading I was getting, she declared that this wire MUST BE the problem and would order the part and send it to me. Expressing my uncertainty at this diagnosis got me nowhere… which didn’t really matter, because at least now a tech was coming. Well, maybe not. She was simply sending me the parts to replace myself. After some extended discussion… she backtracked and said they could send a tech.

Day 11: The parts arrived. Now I am given a telephone number and instructed to make arrangements with the third-party tech company to come and repair the treadmill.

Day 15: Tech arrived… he was shocked that Bowflex/Nautilus made a lay person take apart the machine, go out and buy a multi-meter, and mess around with the insides of the machine. In fact, I heard him on the phone with his boss telling him how unbelievable that was. The tech informed me that, of course, the problem had nothing to do with the parts Bowflex/Nautilus sent and that it was the motor control board that must be replaced. He stated that he would advise Bowflex/Nautilus immediately and get the new part ordered.

Day 21: Six days passed and no part. So I call Bowflex/Nautilus to check and surprise… they had no record of the request or order. But, they’d be happy to order it right away and send it out to me. Another delay.

Day 28: Part arrived and tech re-scheduled.

Day 35: The tech returned… such a nice guy, definitely placed the order for the new part immediately after leaving my house the first time. He replaced the motor control board and finally the treadmill was fixed. I wished him a fond farewell and told him, no offense but I hope to never see him again… he smiled and said “oh you will, you own a Bowflex/Nautilus treadmill.”

Hard for me to give this any more than two stars. The machine itself is nice… but it lasted less than six months before needing repair. And the warranty is absolutely ridiculous. It cost me hours of my time, a trip to the hardware store where I had to spend my own money to buy a product to assist a customer service rep, not a repair tech, diagnose the problem, then wait a month for it to actually be fixed. Needless to say, I won’t be buying a Bowflex/Nautilus product again.

Best of luck to those who buy one anyway.

Good, but NOT GREAT. – Happy Face – Los Angeles, CA United States
Nice machine. Good feel. Heavy. Solid. Falls a little flat. Not quite enough follow through in design and programming.

The users manual is almost useless. It doesn’t explain how to use the pre-set workout programs, or HOW to perform the machine’s routine maintenance. For example it says “lubricate belt” but doesn’t say HOW to do that. And it says “be sure the belt is at the right tension.” How the heck would I know if it is at the right tension? How critical is the tension? Worst of all, the manual seems to be a general guide regardless of which machine you have, so you are never sure (or you have to read Really carefully) whether the particular feature it references even APPLIES to the Series 3.

A nice feature is that the installation hardware arrived neatly packaged in plastic shrunk to a piece of cardboard that made it easy to identify everything and ensure you have everything you need before starting. Unfortunately I was supposed to have 22 of a particular type of screw, but I only had 20 of it. There was another screw type that I only needed four of, but the kit had 6. Fortunately the two extra fit where the two missing needed to go, so I just made sure where I used the “extras” installed where I don’t see them. (Since they are shiny silver, compared to the flat black of the missing ones.) Incidentally there was a small “7″ sticker on the back of the piece of cardboard the hardware kit came on, which made me wonder if perhaps they gave me a series 7 hardware kit?

Unfortunately during my ten mile walk yesterday I got static electric zaps 50 or 60 times. Maybe if I wore the safety clip I wouldn’t build up a charge, but I won’t wear the safety clip because when I accidentally pulled the safety key out (twice!) yesterday the machine wouldn’t restart my program from where it had left off… I had to power down, power up, and re-enter my weight, desired program, etc.
The static electric zaps are NOT because my receptacle isn’t grounded; it is definitely grounded.

The heart rate monitor is unreliable enough to be dismissed as worthless. Heart rate can be an excellent workout guide, but if I were serious about using it I’d get a stand alone system that I could link up to my computer, so this worthless feature doesn’t bother me too much.

The area where you should be able to place your books or magazines is NOT shaped right for placing your reading materials there. Whatta fail! How hard would it have been for them to make a nice ledge? Instead the ledge has no lip and everything is curved plastic. You can sort of balance your magazine there, but I keep thinking it’s going to fall underfoot and I’ll sprain my ankle. I happen to watch TV while walking/jogging, so the reading materials issue doesn’t affect me too much, but it sucks to know the designers were so worried about making the dashboard accommodate the FAN that is present there in the series 5 and 7 that they threw the series 3 customers to the dogs.

I’m not the most intense runner in the world, but I do like to walk or jog 10-15 miles at a time at about 5mph. Since I am so slow I end up having to break up my workout into a couple sessions because the machine won’t let me simply enter my desired DISTANCE. I have to enter how much TIME I want to work out. And it maxes out at 90 minutes. (Or maybe it lets you enter 99 minutes, but I go with a couple of 90 minute workouts for easier math.) It would be nice if I didn’t have to break up my routine and keep track of my stats and add them together later. That seems silly for what could be such a nice machine.

It would be nice if the workout keys were labled, but they aren’t. You have to either simply remember which programs are which, label the buttons yourself, or turn the machine on and off while you select each program to see what it is, then turn it off and on again if that wasn’t the program you wanted, and try the next program.
Also, I don’t mean to complain, but I really miss having a decent “intervals” setting. I was expecting there to be a good “intervals” setting because every “nice” machine I’ve ever used has had a great one.
I’m talking about the kind of program that lets you rest a minute then kicks up the speed and incline for a minute or two then lets you rest, then kicks it up higher, then lets you rest, then kicks it up til you think you’re going to die, etc. THAT is a great workout. This machine doesn’t really have anything like that.

Here is a description of the programs and the led icons for each program:

1. CARDIO (oval track)
-you basically adjust the speed and incline manually throughout your workout

2. CARDIO (2 litle hills)

3. RUNNING (6 little hills)

4. FAT BURN (6 little hills)

5. SPEED INTERVAL (8 little hills)

6. HILL INTERVAL (2 big hills)

Bascially Running, fat burn, and speed interval look like pretty much the same program, just with slightly different speeds and inclines. The cardio and hill interval programs also look pretty similar to each other, except the hill interval raises the incline a lot more.

Bottom line: this is a good, basic, solid machine. It could have been a great machine but Bowflex was more interested in the bells and whistles they gave their series 5 and series 7 customers.

That won’t stop me from getting the most out of my new treadmill, but it will stop me from buying from this company again.

PURCHASE & DELIVERY: The transaction was “smooth,” and the treadmill was delivered within the timeframe specified. I chose curbside delivery, but the delivery guys placed it inside my garage (which, as I understand it, they weren’t required to do).

MOVING UNIT INTO RESIDENCE: I moved it from the garage into the basement myself (no stairs, THANK GOODNESS!). I’m a male, 5′8″ 155 lbs. If you intend to locate this treadmill on an upper floor or up any stairs, be prepared to either pay the delivery guys extra, or have some “strong” friends on standby. At 271 lbs., this is no lightweight machine.

UNPACKING & ASSEMBLY: After unpacking the treadmill, I put it together in about 45 min. w/o any help. The instructions were pretty simple and clear. I would suggest you raise the deck and make sure it is centered between the arms before finally tightening all the bolts (I didn’t do this, and had to loosen the bolts and make a simple adjustment of the two front supports before tightening the bolts again — the problem I encountered was the deck came into contact with one arm when I raised it). That was the only problem I had with the assembly. All hardware is included along with the tools needed to put the treadmill together: phillips head, allen wrench. I used my longer phillips head screwdriver when installing the two plastic pieces to the base on each side.

WORKING OUT ON THE TREADMILL: I had to adjust the belt a tad the first time. A T-shaped allen wrench is included for this adjustment. The console is visually appealing, and the pre-programmed workouts are sufficient; or you can manually set up your workout (speed, incline, time). The unit is fairly quiet, but I had to turn up the T.V. a tad to watch a program while working out. It does not include an option for my Ipod, but does have a slot for a memory stick. Just load your music on the memory stick, and it will play through the speakers on the unit. Not the best sound, but it’s a treadmill not a home theater unit. You can monitor your heart rate either through the supplied chest strap or by gripping the front rail. As I mentioned earlier, I’m not large so I had no trouble running on the deck. It is solid, and I experienced no unusual shaking or movement of the unit as I ran. This is convenient for me because I usually run on the streets in my neighborhood. I will continue to do that, but on rainy days I don’t have to worry about missing my run. I can just lower the deck (very easy to lower & raise), and take off. Lastly there is a fan on the console, but it’s not big enough to be helpful; the two holders for water bottles are on each side of the console and fairly accessible; the emergency cut-off switch is attached to a cord that seems long enough to accomodate most people

CONCLUSION: I looked at the Sole F63 / F80. I would not mind owning either of these. As a matter of fact, I almost purchased a used Sole F63, but the owner backed out at the last minute. I decided on the Smooth 7.35 because of the SPECIAL longer warranty: 7 yrs on parts, 2 yrs. on labor; the deck & motor have a lifetime warranty. Since treadmills are high maintenance machines, the extra warranty sealed the deal. So far, I have had a good experience with my Smooth 7.35.

Perfect so far – Decebalvs – Bellevue, WA USA
When I first started looking for a treadmill, I naively thought I should be done in a few hours and spend around 1000. A few weekends later, and after increasing the spending limit to 2000 I was still not satisfied with anything on the market. The reviews and other information available on the popular models are terrible. I expect next to zero problems and full customer support on anything that costs over 1000!
Finally I ran into this new model, and I knew I had a winner. Delivery time was three weeks (I payed for placement inside the house). Unpacking and assembling was a breeze. Only high quality components. It says Made in Taiwan, which is a strong selling point for me nowadays.
My wife and I tested it for a couple of hours and so far we love it. Very silent, and it does what it’s supposed to do.
Also, looks even better in real life than it does in the pictures. Not to mention the best warrantee on the market.
I will update or post another review if I run into major problems with it.

Unpredictable to the point of dangerous – Pausanius – Atlanta GA
While I wish I could echo the comments on here, I took a gamble on the Smooth Fitness 7.35 treadmill in mid-February and have so far lost my bets.

Upon arrival in early March (3 weeks from order), the treadmill was incredibly easy to put together. The console is nice and large, speakers decent, the deck plenty long and wide with a solid feel. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives stopped. While I bought this treadmill partially for its warranty, I did not expect to use it the first day.

The initial problem: The treadmill speed is unpredictable to the point of dangerous.

Upon the first attempt, I set the treadmill on its base speed (0.5 mph) and proceeded to stand on the belt… and it stops! At 6′2″ and 180 lbs, the motor and belt shouldn’t be stopping by any means. I proceed to stand on the side rails and increase the speed to 1.0 mph. It starts… and stops… and starts… so I decide to reset it as is usual logic with most electronics.

Again, I place the console on the base speed and just let it run underneath as I stand on the side rails. *Without touching anything*, the treadmill ZOOMS from 0 to top speed with absolutely no notice or gradual lead-up. Just sudden, instant top-speed.

Now, had I been standing on this, let alone my wife, either of us could have been seriously injured given there was zero notice and nothing was touched. Sure enough, every time from there on, the treadmill exhibited the same problem over and over rendering it unusuable.

I called Smooth Fitness technical service and to their credit, the technical support person was very friendly, returned calls promptly, and admitted he hadn’t seen this type of problem before. He also stated this is a new model and that may be a contributing factor. He suggested having the treadmill replaced; however, customer service wasn’t so willing. They gave two options — pay the 0 shipping to have it returned or the treadmill must be serviced with replacement parts from a local fitness service center. They do *not* exchange units, despite hardware failures.

The cliche “between a rock and a hard place” comes to mind. As I wasn’t looking to spend 0 on top of the ,500 I already spent on a brand new machine, I reluctantly agreed to have a service rep come out. Two weeks later, a service technician came out (now more than a month after purchase) and suggested a new motherboard. The technician left and another two weeks later the part arrived and a technician was back out to install it.

For the time being, the treadmill worked alright. It inclined, declined, increased and decreased in speed consistently . . . or at least for the next couple weeks.

Problem #2: E1 — Speed Errors

The console turns on, you can set your programs, and then… nothing. No treadmill movement, just the error code.

I’m waiting on a resolution on this — I’ll update this review once I hear back from Smooth Fitness, hopefully tomorrow.

As a final note, I did write a review on Smooth Fitness’ website that was honest to the unfortunate facts, but positive to the structural feel and prompt response of technical service. Given it was not the stellar review like their others, they chose not to publish it, to which I can only assuming because it was not glowing.

In the end, I do believe their treadmills should be quality based upon Consumer Reports and Runner’s World; however, when you’re given a lemon, how many times should your product need to be repaired before they finally replace it? Particularly when you just paid for it brand new?

UPDATE on 5/10: Smooth shipped a new motherboard and had a technician come and install it per the warranty. After 24 hours, it is running okay. I have increased the rating from 1 to 2 stars as while I still have reservations about the product, the technical services response on the phone has been good at returning my phone calls.

Precor 9.35 Premium Series Treadmill Reviews By Customers

Here’s the quick summary: I love this treadmill. It’s a phrase I never thought I’d utter in my life. But it’s true. It’s strong, super-sturdy, comfortable, full-featured, high tech, and certainly built to last.

That part was for the people with a lot to do, or maybe a short attention span. If you’ve got the time, here goes the full review with all the gory details.

I just moved into a new house about a week before receiving this treadmill. I had already set aside one bedroom as an exercise room. I was excited about it, and so I went to the Precor website to see what I could see. On the site they have a “Space Planner” that allows you to create a blueprint-style layout of the room you plan on using the equipment in. It’s very cool because it shows you the exact size of the machine in relation to the room. For me, it was a pretty scary revelation because the room isn’t all that big, but it worked out fine in the end.

=== SHIPPING / MOVING ===

Shipping is a big deal with an item of this size, so I’m going to talk about it even though it has no impact on my rating because it is not indicative of the item itself. The box containing the treadmill is shipped freight to your door in a box that is over 7 feet long and could pretty easily contain at least two or three full grown men. It weighs in at almost 350 pounds. It’s important to keep this in mind — if you plan on keeping the treadmill in your garage, then you’re in luck. The driver will load the crate into your garage for you and you’re all set.

I wasn’t so lucky. First, my garage is filled with still-packed boxes from the move, a motorcycle and a couple of kayaks that I haven’t found a place for yet. There was no getting ANYTHING in there. And even if I could, the garage is in the opposite direction from the “exercise room”, so there was no point in putting it there. Well, I guess there’s some sort of legal reason, but the shipping guy would not bring the crate into the house. He set it down in front of my door and watched me while I opened it, carrying all of the small pieces into the house and finally dragging the massive bottom piece inside with extreme difficulty, all on my own. When I had finally gotten it all inside, he took his palette back and said goodbye.

So then I started the process of moving everything into the bedroom. I had to do this on my own. Don’t. It was awful. Have someone there to help you. It would not fit through the bedroom door, the largest piece (the whole bottom portion is already assembled from the factory) was over 6.5 feet long, about 3 feet wide, and weighed nearly 300 pounds, which was not evenly distributed. The heavier end did have wheels on it, but these are only good when you’re in an area wide enough to keep them on the ground.

=== INSTALLATION ===

Okay, so on to the installation. I received a sheet along with the treadmill that offered free professional installation for a limited time, by calling a toll-free number. It said “Offer Expires November 9, 2009″, so you may or may not get one with yours, I can’t honestly say for sure. But apparently a Precor expert comes to your house to put the machine together. This can still be done without the coupon, but I guess they normally charge a fee to do so.

I decided not to take them up on their offer for two reasons: First, it didn’t look that bad. And second, I wanted to be able to include the setup in my review of the product.

The only tool you need to put the treadmill together is a phillips head screwdriver. Any other required tools are already included in the box. In the instructions, they recommend having a second person to help out. I found this unnecessary, although it certainly would have been helpful in connecting the display. Even by myself, it didn’t take long to set up. With the main belt housing in position, place the uprights one at a time and screw them on with the provided allen wrench. Place the arm rest/crossbar piece on top of the uprights, tighten with the allen wrench. Plug in the display, set on top of the crossbar and tighten with the allen wrench. Screw the water bottle holders on with the screwdriver, and you’re done. The instructions are clear and thorough, and it would be pretty hard to mess up if you’re following them.

=== LOOK/FEEL/SOUND/TASTE ===

Okay, I admit I didn’t taste the treadmill.

This thing looks like a high end commercial grade treadmill. You’d expect to see it in a REALLY nice gym. It has a beautiful brushed aluminum style with a firm, dark gray rubber on the arms and a large display console that shows a lot of information at once.

The running deck is solid and is mounted on pieces that give in slightly on impact. It’s hardly noticeable to the eye, but noticeably easier on the joints. It feels an awful lot better than whatever suspension system they use on some of the lower-end treadmills.

The motor and belt are pretty quiet, too. Of course it does make some noise, but it’s really not much. If my girlfriend is on the treadmill in the bedroom with the door open and I’m in the living room, I can hear a slight whisper if there is no ambient noise around. If she closes the door, I can’t hear anything.

=== FUNCTIONS ===

A number of different workout modes are available, but I’m not going to go into them in too much depth. Much of this information is readily available in the product description, and I don’t want to just regurgitate information that is readily available at the top of the page. But I like the programs that are offered. And as the programs are running, you can make any changes as you see fit, like speeding up or changing the incline to suit your needs. And it will remember your choices. For example, the default “Weight Loss” program is 30 minutes of alternating 3-degree incline and flat segments. Now let’s say you’re in the middle of a 3-degree incline segment and you want to change your speed to 2.5 mph and your incline to 4 degrees. From that point forward, EVERY incline segment during your current workout will default to 4 degrees at 2.5 mph unless you change it again.

I also like the “Walk in the Park” program which simulates the uneven terrain of an outdoor jogging trail by making small adjustments to the incline over the course of the program.

I also like the “Pacer” feature that shows you how you’re doing in relation to your previous best run on a given program.

The treadmill enters a “cool down” period for 5 minutes after each program, which slows you down gently to a walking pace. This is supposedly better for your body than just coming to a complete stop. After the cool down period, you will be shown your overall stats (assuming you’re using one of the user profiles), such as how far you have gone, how many calories you’ve burned, time spent, etc. since you started using the treadmill.

=== DISPLAY ===

The treadmill display shows a lot of good information. It’s important to me to have a display that doesn’t require a million key presses to get to the info I want to see. Starting from the upper left, there is a full-time calorie burn counter, then on the right is the heart rate and the heart rate scale under that. The big center display shows the program you’re running, where you are within the program, and what incline changes are coming up. Then there’s a single-line scrolling display that can show you the program completion percentage, alert you to an upcoming change in belt speed, as well as display a number of different metrics including max heart rate, average heart rate, etc.

The four numerical displays along the bottom, from left to right, are Time (Elapsed or Remaining, selectable with a toggle button), current incline in degrees, current speed, and another button-selectable field (Average Speed, Pace, and Distance Traveled).

There’s a piece along the front of the display that allows you to hold an open book or magazine in place, as well. And there’s a big pocket at the top for holding a selection of said reading material.

=== GADGETRY ===

The treadmill has two different ways to monitor your heartbeat. The first way is to hold on to the two handles under the display, on either side of the red “Stop” button. After a few seconds it’ll get a lock on your pulse and display the information as both a number and on a scale (Warm up —> Fat Burning —> Cardio —> Peak High). If you don’t want to use the handles, it also comes with a really nifty wireless chest strap that sends the information to the treadmill. I have no idea how that thing works. It doesn’t even take a battery, but somehow it’s beaming information around. I prefer the chest strap because I don’t want to be holding those handlesevery time I want to see my heart rate.

There’s also this self-adjusting belt speed thing that the Precor calls “Integrated Footplant Technology”. However they do it, it measures the speed of your feet as they hit the belt and makes minute adjustments to perfectly simulate moving over a stationary surface. It eliminates that awkward sensation you sometimes get when your stride gets a little bit out of sync with the moving belt. I don’t feel like I can satifactorily verbally explain how awesome this feature is, but believe me — it’s really cool!

===========================

From the looks of it, Precor has a serious arsenal of good equipment on the market. The 9.35 Premium Series Treadmill is their flagship consumer treadmill for 2009, and it delivers in every way. I could not find a complaint in installation, build quality, use, or feature set. Is it worth the cost? As with most purchases, this is a question you’d have to answer for yourself. I can tell you this: if you look at the price, and then look at the treadmill in person, and maybe use it for a bit, your response would be, “Okay. I get it.”

Also, the Precor website has a very useful product comparison tool that will give you everything you need to know about the price differences throughout its product line. I’ve seen a lot of awful comparison tools that give you no good insight, but this one works. And if you can’t justify buying this one, maybe there’s another one that will work better for you.

Finally, I’d like to invite everyone to leave a comment on the review if you have a question, need clarification, if you would like to see photos, etc. I’ll be sure to respond as soon as possible.

About Nautilus
Nautilus, Inc. is a pure fitness company that provides the tools and education necessary to help people achieve a fit and healthy lifestyle.
Works great for 7 months – Paul N. –
I bought a brand new Nautilus T518 in June 2009. I used it consistenly (12 – 15 miles per week) for 7 months and it STOPPED working. The internal circuit breaker would flip and the power would cut out.

The retail store sent out a repair guy and determined the transformer was overheating. They ordered a new controller board from Nautilus. Three weeks later the part finally arrived and the service guy installed it. After running on it for 5 minutes the same problem happened.

This machine is junk and the manufacturer doesn’t care how long it takes to send out replacement parts.

Bowflex Series 5 Treadmill Reviews By Customers
A great buy! The treadmill arrived within 2 weeks of ordering it. It was easy to put together, and with two of us working on it, it was done within 30 minutes. My husband and I each use it daily to run. It works well at high speeds for average weight people. We couldn’t decide between the 3 and the 5. So glad we got the 5. The extra length is really worth it. Fairly easy to figure out, although the elevation doesn’t seem to be working. It may be easy to fix, but we wouldn’t really use it anyways. The treadmill feels really solid, like a professional gym type. My complaint is that it takes a few seconds for it to start the band moving and a while for it to get up to speed, which can skew the end results. But overall, we love it and was certainly worth the price with free shipping. I would purchase it again any day.
Also we just put the treadmill on an extra piece of carpet in the basement and it stays put just fine. No need for an expensive “special” mat for underneath. Check Save Price!

Excellent – K. J. Lee – Los Angeles, CA
Aesthetically pleasing, easy to use, and convenient. It’s heavier than it looks, but that just makes it sturdy. Great product overall.
Check Save Price!

Product Defective. – Lisa W. Merritt –
As was the case in the other reviews (reviews for the other bowflex treadmills), the shippers would only unload the box into the garage. I expected this after reading the other reviews, so this was not a big problem. I found a moving company who would move it to the bedroom for . The console was rather difficult to put on with only one person. I finally recruited someone to help me hold it up while I connected the cords and got it into place. Overall, set up was fairly easy. The first problem I found is that the plastic film that goes over the console parts seemed to have melted onto the console. While I did manage to get the plastic off, there is a sticky residue left. The next problem I encountered, after calibration, is that there seems to be a bump or wobble in the treadmill itself. It’s not too bothersome to walk on, but it worries me there may be a bigger underlying problem. The final problem is that when I turned on the fan, it started making a very loud rattling sound. The fan doesn’t work at all. It sounds like a piece may be broken off inside. It makes a sound like a garbage disposal makes when you turn it on. I’ve contacted Amazon customer service about the problem. I’ll update my review once I see how the resolution plays out. For now, I can’t rate this product well because it is filled with defects. Because most of the other reviews have been so positive about this product, I think I must have just received a lemon.
Check Save Price!

Well built, just a couple quirks – T. Duffin – Austin, TX
Overall my wife and I are happy with the treadmill.

The build quality is good, and is very stable when I run (180 lbs). The unit is HEAVY.

The fan is noisy and doesn’t move, so unless you’re the perfect height it doesn’t help. After keying in the program on the right keypad, you have to hit start on the left. Minor issue, but weird that it’s not on the other side with all the other buttons.

Oh, and I get shocked whenever I touch the side rail. If you walk, and are holding on, it’s fine. But, when you let go for a while and then touch, it sets you back on course.

Overall I’m glad we got it.
Check Save Price!

A versatile treadmill for walking, jogging, and running, the Nautilus Sport Series T516 LEX will keep you feeling fit year-round. The T516 LEX is distinguished by a large 3.0-horsepower, continuous-duty Hyperdrive motor system that delivers a smooth, consistent workout at any pace, along with a SuperSoft running belt that provides extra cushioning for the knees and joints. The React suspension deck, meanwhile, further softens the 20-by-57-inch running surface to guarantee even longer workout sessions. Users have their choice of nine preset workout programs, three custom programs, and two heart rate control programs (includes wireless Polar chest strap), depending on skill and preference levels. As an alternative, users can adjust the treadmill manually, with an incline range of 0 to 15 percent and a speed range of 0.5 to 12 miles per hour.

Need feedback on your workout? Turn to the amber LED display, which offers a number of basic stats, including time, distance, incline, heart rate, pace, and calories burned. And thanks to the built-in stability bar, you can regain your balance in an instant should you lose your focus. Other details include a membrane switch keypad, machine-crowned 2.5-inch rollers, a welded steel main frame, storage for two water bottles, a book/magazine ledge with a built-in key tray, and compatibility with three Nautilus software packages: My Nautilus Diary, Heart Strong, and My Nautilus LX. The T516 LEX measures 30 by 50 by 83 inches (W x H x D) and supports up to 375 pounds. It also carries the following warranties: lifetime on the frame, 10 years on the parts, and one year on the labor.

Afer having beat and broken 4 treadmills and this is number 5, I decided to spend a little more money and INVEST in the best treadmill I could afford. I have researched all the review websites and consumer reports. I even checked out the Treadmill Budda ( who, by the way was very interesting and mighty helpful). For the money and the size of motor this one has,I would say it can’t be beat. On the other hand, if you fall into some money, the StarTrac(7,000 for the one I LOOOOVED) would be nice! The only reason I gave this one 4 stars out of 5 was the profanity that ensued ater opening the box and assembling the thing. Save your marriage and pay a teenager 50 bucks to put it together. Happy running:)
